North Korea
We wanted to be well-informed travellers and watched all of the documentaries and films we could get hold of before visiting the hermit kingdom. But that single narrative of repression, supported by shaky pin-hole cam footages, mosaic images, muffled conversations and entertaining editing very much clouded our own minds before we even set foot in the country.
With that, we touched down in Pyongyang International Airport. Scenes of what we saw on Youtube came to life. Strict rules to be followed, ones that we were advised not to challenge for our own safety.
On the bus out of the airport, “Did Wes Anderson get his inspiration here?” was our first impression of North Korea. Pyongyang’s city designer has indeed a unique taste for complementary pastel colours, and these beautiful paddle-pop coated buildings awaited our arrival.
So far, the experience had been great.
Errrr… Are we being brainwashed already?
Second impression - it reminded us of Singapore in the 1980s. The colourful modular public housing, communal areas like playgrounds and badminton courts in the estate, its orderliness and nicely paved roads with few cars. It was oddly familiar.
